The 4th of July. Independence Day in the United States of America. For many people, the 4th of July is synonymous with barbecues, fireworks, and cold beverages on a hot summer day. Here in Los Sueños, Costa Rica, we have all of that and more to make your Independence Day as patriotic as possible.
The Ideal Setting for a Celebration
“Costa Rica? Why go there for the 4th of July?” Great question. Did you know that there are somewhere between 100,000 - 200,000 U.S. citizens living full time in Costa Rica? In Los Sueños in particular, most of the homeowners are themselves Americans, and while they may be “expats”, they are still every bit as patriotic.
At the Beach Club in Los Sueños, there is a very special 4th of July fireworks event. At the Al Fresco beach bar and cafe, they serve a special barbecue menu for the occasion and open the entrance to the public for this day only, so that fellow Americans from outside of the resort can come dressed in red, white, and blue, to celebrate their home nation’s independence.
Have you ever noticed that a palm tree has the same form as a firework? The resemblance is hard to ignore after you’ve watched the fireworks go off above the great, beautiful palm trees that line the property of Los Sueños Resort on Herradura Bay.
The Perfect Time for a Vacation
July is one of our most favorite times of year here on the central pacific coast of Costa Rica. Locals often call July a “second summer”, with the main summer being from December - April. Yet in July, the rains seem to cease once more, making it a great moment for Costa Ricans to visit the beaches and for tourists to travel down for vacation. The vegetation is green and thriving and the skies are blue.
While it’s not quite as busy as the “high season” of December - April, it’s a great time where we often receive visitors who take advantage of summer vacation to travel to Costa Rica. Spending the 4th of July in Costa Rica will certainly be a memory your children will cherish forever.

Costa Rica and Independence
“Will Costa Ricans be celebrating independence too?” Well, not quite. On September 15, 1821, all of Central America obtained their independence from Spain. Like many towns in the U.S., Costa Ricans celebrate their independence with a day off from work, and most towns have a parade with marching bands and other festivities. Around Los Sueños, however, many ticos are happy to join in the celebrations with their friends from the U.S. on the 4th of July.
