1) Carara National Park: Located a short drive from Los Sueños, just 2 kilometers from the Tarcoles Bridge (Crocodile Bridge) its name is in the indigenous Huetar language and means ¨River of Crocodiles¨, it has the only transition forest in the Central Pacific and therefore offers flora and fauna from both the dry forest and rainforest . It´s perfect for birdwatching. It is open every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the months from May to November and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the months of December through April. Foreigners pay $10.00 per adult and children $5.00. It also offers Universal Trail for the population with disabilities.
2) Playa Hermosa -Punta Mala National Wildlife Refuge: Located just 5km from Jaco beach town it was created with the objective of protecting the site as a nesting place of the Kemp´s ridley sea turtle. The refuge offers beach, estuaries, flooded forests, lakes and lagoons. Turtles visit this site every year in July and August. Fishing and camping are forbidden in the area.
3) Manuel Antonio National Park: From Los Sueños driving to Manuel Antonio takes a little over one hour. As the most visited national park in Costa Rica, it offers a perfect combination of beautiful beaches and incredible awe-inspiring nature that comes to life as you walk down its different trails. Here you can find endangered species, mangrove, marine habitats and even a lake. It opens from Tuesday through Sunday and has a restriction on the total number of daily visitors. Close to a year ago the Park inaugurated its elevated universal trail ¨El Manglar¨, with a length of 784 meters (2,572 feet) and is 2.4 meters wide (7.87 feet); it was built over a mangrove, hence the name, in an area of the park that wasn’t accessible to the tourists in the past and which leads to Espadilla Sur Beach and connects with other existing trails.
4) Marino Ballena National Park: A perfect site for dolphin and whale watching, it is also known for its rock and sand formation in the shape of a whale’s tail. The ocean is perfect to swim and visitors that choose to take a whale watching tour also have the opportunity to snorkel.
