Costa Rica has two seasons: dry and green. The dry season begins in late November or early December. Surfing is excellent during dry season with primo, but challenging, conditions. Less skilled enthusiasts will appreciate calmer surf near Los Sueños. Jacó surf shops rent boards, lessons, and surf camps; they can also direct you to some of the nearby breaks. Most beaches are accessible and the beach bums in your family will appreciate the chance to soak up some sun.
Olive Ridley, leatherback and green sea turtles come ashore in November and December from Guanacaste south along the Pacific coast. Hatchlings head for the ocean through May.
Los Sueños’ Triple Crown billfish series starts Jan. 22-25; Legs II and III are Feb. 28-Mar. 3 and Mar. 21-24, respectively. The dates are no accident: marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, and more call these water home. Most boats participate in the tourney, but are available at other times.
Envision Fest, Feb. 22-25, in Uvita, a two-hour drive south, is a multi-day tropical party to rival Nevada’s Burning Man. Semana Santa or Easter week begins Palm Sunday. Traditional and colorful religious processions Wednesday through Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, commemorate Christ’s trial, crucifixion and resurrection. Throughout Costa Rica, the pageantry makes the processions a must-see.
The green season, with its near-daily rains, begins in May and the crowds drop off. Don’t let that discourage you: Accommodations, tours, and flights are cheaper during this period, meaning your money will go farther. You’ll also spend less time waiting in line and more time having fun.
High water volumes also mean the waterfalls are at their best. Downriver, rafters will have a riverside view of the rainforest. Nearby, the Savegre River, with Class II-III rapids, is a bit more but still suitable for families with older children (8 and over). The Naranjo River, Class III-IV, ups the ante while still being safe.
Ziplining, canyoning, horseback riding, kayaking, and hiking are year-round adventures for everyone. There are many tours available. HRG staff can provide information, make recommendations, or book tours for you.
