7 Romantic Things to do on Vacation in Costa Rica

With the holidays upon us and Valentine’s day just around the corner, its a good time to think about surprising your special someone with a romantic escape to Costa Rica. Relaxing, luxurious, and exotic, Costa Rica is a perfect place for an intimate getaway. From colorful tropical forest vistas, to hidden lakes and waterfalls, to secluded beaches, there are romantic spots everywhere in Costa Rica. There are also a wealth of romantic activities to enjoy with your significant other.

Here are a few of our favorite romantic Costa Rica vacation activities:

A Sunset Cruise

Heading out on a tropical sunset cruise is one of the most romantic things you can do in Costa Rica. The salt air, the lush green backdrop, the sounds of the sea . . . it’s a beautiful way to celebrate. One of Costa Rica’s best sunset cruises is the Sunset Champagne Cruise, which departs from Los Sueños Marina and offers champagne and exquisite hors d’ouervres.

A Horseback Ride

There are many places in Costa Rica to enjoy a romantic horseback ride together, whether through the rainforest, over the beach, or up the mountainside. Discovery Horseback Tours in Jaco offers a tour perfect for couples; their Jungle Spa Adventure Tour takes you through beautiful mountain, beach and rainforest scenery to a hidden waterfall. Enjoy your time in the secluded heart of the jungle, and indulge in a refreshing natural mud spa.

A Nature Hike

Whether you would like to trek through remote parts of the rainforest, check out an active volcano, or take a leisurely walk through a gorgeous cloud forest, there are endless places for a private hike together in Costa Rica. You may even find some secluded spots perfect for a romantic picnic.

A Spa Retreat

A delightful spa retreat is never far away in Costa Rica. Located on the country’s Pacific coast, the Los Sueños Resort features two spas, which offer couple’s retreats, complete with couple’s massages and as many amenities as you would like. Don’t feel like leaving your cozy condo? Not a problem; you can ask your HRG concierge to send a couple of therapists your way for a nice afternoon couple’s massage.

A Day on the Beach

From a picnic, to an evening bonfire, to a leisurely, private stroll across the sand at sunset, you have many options for enjoying some time together on the beach.

A Fishing Trip

At first blush, a fishing trip may not seem like a romantic idea. However, chartering a boat and heading out to relax and enjoy each other’s company on the open water may just be the perfect choice for the two of you.

A Sumptuous Dinner

Whether you want to enjoy a four-course meal in a 5-star restaurant, or have your own private catered dinner in your luxury condo or villa, you’ll find a way to have the perfect romantic meal.

Secluded Spots in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Romantic Hideaways

Arenal Hanging Bridges park of Costa Rica

Some people head to Costa Rica to experience the nightlife, try the cuisine and mingle with the locals and other travelers. Meanwhile, others head to this beautiful country to escape the everyday and find a secluded spot to relax, get closer to nature, or enjoy a romantic getaway.

If a private corner of paradise this sounds like your dream trip, we’ve got your number. Here is our list of the best private hideaways in Costa Rica.

Hidden Waterfalls

Costa Rica’s mountainous terrain and numerous rivers make it a prime place for some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls. While some of these falls are popular tourist attractions, many others are tucked away in the recesses of the rainforest, and can only be accessed by horseback, a long hike, or an ATV ride.

At the summit of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano in Guanacaste, you’ll find the Cataratas Escondidas, which literally means “hidden waterfalls.” Not only will you get a private view of these cascading falls – you’ll have the experience of standing on the crest of a dormant volcano.

The Nauyaca Waterfalls are tucked away on private property, near a secluded canyon in Costa Rica’s southern Pacific area. Two separate falls cascade into a silver pool that’s perfect for swimming. The falls can be reached by horseback, and the property owner offers daily horseback tours.

Secluded Beaches

Costa Rica features an extensive coastline that extends on both its Pacific and Caribbean sides. There are beaches to suit every preference, from swimming, to surfing, to hanging out alone – or together with your favorite person.

Located just moments away from the Los Sueños Resort is Playa Fantasia, one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful and most secluded beaches. Playa Fantasia is only accessible by boat, and features white sands and a coral reef perfect for snorkeling adventures.

Surrounded by the jungle and located off a dirt road, Playa Barrigona features a long swath of empty and beautiful shoreline. La Isla de Caño, an uninhabited island 10 miles out to sea from Osa Penibsula, features pristine, unspoiled white sand beaches with few visitors. And perhaps most secluded of all, Uvita’s signature “whale tail” disappears at high tide each day, and reemerges at low tide to expose golden sands perfect for an uninterrupted stroll.

Rainforest Hideaway

If you’re looking for the path less traveled through the rainforest, one of the best places to visit is the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve. Located next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, this is a private park that hosts surprisingly few travelers, and offers intrepid visitors a better peek at Costa Rican wildlife and a view of a practically untouched rainforest setting.

Honeymoon in Costa Rica Paradise

My Recent Honeymoon in Paradise; Costa Rica is Absolutely Perfect!

Guest post by By Ashley R.

Costa-Rica-honeymoonRecently, we took a honeymoon trip the Los Sueños Resort in Costa Rica. My new husband surprised me so many times on this trip that I will forever refer to it as the ‘Trip of Surprises’. First off, I trusted him enough to make our destination plans for us. He is a travel agent so I figured he’d do a better job than me anyway. I had a wish list for the trip and he was able to knock out every item I wished for. I wanted to go someplace warm and tropical. I wanted luxurious accommodations. I wanted to go all out with every amenity you could ask for in a resort. I wanted to take a couple of days to explore the area and see something unique. Mostly, though, I wanted to relax and be completely pampered during our stay.

He made all the plans and I only found out where we were going when we got to the airport the morning after our wedding. It had been a long grueling year planning for the expensive affair and we were worn out from the process. When I heard that we were going to Costa Rica, I was a little unsure of how much luxurious pampering I was going to get there. To be honest, I pictured 2 star little hotels with décor from the 1970’s. I don’t know where I got the image. Maybe from an old detective show I used to watch whose office was in Costa Rica.

When we reached our destination, I was beyond happy with what I saw. A limousine picked us up from the airport and we enjoyed chilled Champaign on our way. The limo was air conditioned, but I wanted the windows down to let in the warm, flowery tropical breeze. I could tell from that limo ride that this was going to be a great vacation!

When we arrived at the resort, the beauty of the setting as well as the Mediterranean architecture blew me away. My boyfriend, oops, I mean, my husband, had rented an amazing luxury condo overlooking the golf greens and the ocean. Check luxurious accommodations off the wish list! Our condo, was a over 3000 square feet in size. We had spacious master bedroom with a king size bed, and en-suite bathroom, and the balcony off our living room had a dining table with an ocean view. There was a gourmet kitchen, fully equipped, which was amazing for pancakes at 3am, but mostly we went out to dinner; there were so many wonderful restaurants to chose from! I felt like a queen.

During our stay we went on a couple of adventure tours into the jungle and also went snorkeling. The wildlife in Costa Rica is amazing. We saw many species that are unique to the area like the glass frogs and glass winged butterflies. Who knew such creatures existed? While snorkeling we saw a diverse selection of colorful fish and even a turtle!

I enjoyed the pampering the most, as I figured that I would. When my new husband told me we were going to spend a day at the spa he wasn’t kidding! We were there for six hours and enjoyed a beautiful light lunch too. I started my spa day with a well-being body massage that began with a dry body brushing that removed any dead skin in order to oxygenate the outer layers of tissue. Then I was ready for the organic black forest mud wrap; a neck to toes treatment that left me feeling squeaky-clean. I had a special Vichy rainforest shower, a facial, a manicure and a pedicure. It was all done with herbal essential oils that smelled divine and left me feeling refreshed. My husband knows how to make a woman feel pampered!
