Girl’s Getaway in Los Sueños, Costa Rica

My Recent Girl’s Getaway to Los Sueños Resort, Costa Rica

 Guest Post by Celina A.

Sometimes you just need to get away and take your girlfriends with you. A friend of mine once gave me a little business card size note once that said, “If you ever run away, take me with you!” I left that card in my wallet for years because it meant a lot to me.

One day, I decided to take her up on it. I’d had a crazy year at my job. My employers were piling 3 people’s work onto my plate and I knew it was the same with my co-workers. It was time for a well-deserved break! I called my sister, and the friend who’d given me that card, and said; “I’m running away for a whole two weeks! Come with me!”

I had searched around online for different places, but one of the most relaxing and luxurious choices that really stood out to me was the Los Sueños Resort and Marina in Costa Rica. The beautiful green mountains against a blue sky as a backdrop and the blue waters with light pink, or even black, sand drew me and I told the girls, “Let’s go to Costa Rica!”

Los Sueños is situated on the central Pacific of Costa Rica. A master planned community, there is a marina, a beach club, a golf course and a small “village” of shops and restaurants. Never a dull moment, there is plenty to do within the resort, and outside- well, lets just say the adventure never stops. Between river rafting, zip-line canopy tours, horseback riding and surfing, the days seemingly flew by.

A typical day at Los Sueños Resort began when we woke up in our rented three-bedroom condo and grabbed some fresh local fruit from the refrigerator to enjoy while we sipped rich Costa Rican coffee on our balcony as the sun rose. The awesome staff at HRG Properties and Rentals even pre-stocked our refrigerator with local foods and gourmet goodies from Jimmy T’s gourmet shop for us before we arrived!

Now I’m not a sailor or a fisherman, but I do love to eat fresh fish and I’d heard the sport fishing out of Los Sueños Resort & Marina is amazing! So, we booked a day of fishing in advance. Wow. What a day of adventure, and there are really no words sufficient to describe the meal we enjoyed that night in our condo, prepared, of course by the private chef we hired through HRG.

One day we felt like relaxing and playing a round of golf. Let me tell you, the golf course at Los Sueños Resort is one of a kind, with all the wildlife joining in the fun. My girlfriends and I enjoyed an 18-hole game on a gorgeous course that runs next to the rainforest and is flanked on the other side by the ocean. What amazing views! Although we got nowhere near the 72-par mark, the fact that we played on a championship course designed by Ted Robinson is something to brag about. The unique and colorful animals of the rainforest gave us even more wonderful sights to see and sounds to hear while we played.

After golfing, we all treated ourselves to a massage. Upon request, the HRG Concierge Team sent over three therapists, so after our massages we didn’t have to go anywhere; we just lounged around in our robes and drank wine. Costa Rican culture promotes the phrase, “Pura Vida”, which means, “pure lIfe”. The spa therapists that HRG works with base their treatments with this in mind and it works! I’d never had a rainforest massage before that and I’d love another.

If you are planning a “Girls Only” retreat, take a look at Los Sueños Resort. We loved it and I know you would to!

First Steps For Relocating to Costa Rica

Pair of beach loungers on the deserted coast sea at sunrise.

If You are Thinking About Relocating to Costa Rica, You May Want to do a Scouting Expedition First.

As with any contemplated move abroad, Costa Rica should receive a good, thorough scouting expedition before you sell your stuff, pack up that shipping container and join the many expatriates who have made Costa Rica their new home.

When it comes to possible locations for the adventurous of heart to consider, Costa Rica can’t be beat.

Close enough to the United States to boast direct flights provided by over a dozen major airlines, Costa Rica is just a 3 to 7 hour flight from home so it is easy to get back to visit family and friends. In fact, its not much different from moving from one end of the United States to the other, except that you’d be moving to an entirely different country and all the benefits that come with that.

If you are on your way to becoming a Costa Rica expat, there are a few things you can do to prepare.

Launch a major scouting expedition

Any contemplated move to any country in the world should be preceded by a good long experience in the country of choice. If you can, you should try to visit more than one and definitely spend a few months getting to know the culture, the area, the language and more. One weeklong vacation in Costa Rica does not serve to tell you whether or not you can live here. You need to experience the place from the perspective of a resident.

Study Your Spanish

Once you’ve decided that indeed Costa Rica is the one for you, you should make an effort to start learning Spanish. Just the basics will do at first, and you can load an application on your smart phone or carry around a small translation dictionary to get around, but everyone who chooses to relocate to another country should make an effort to learn the language of their host country. Don’t expect others to figure it out for you. Let go of the “Ugly American” stereotypical expectation that others should speak English; part of the adventure is total emersion.

Reach out to Other Expats for Advice

There are a number of forums, blogs, and websites that are by expatriates and for expatriates. Among them are Internations, Expat Focus,  and others; you can also check out the Tico Times, which is the “gringo” paper in CR. On these you will find plenty of information, advice and guidance for your adventurous move abroad. Others who have gone before you can answer important questions you may have about banking, health care, shopping, real estates, taxes, and more. Reach out, get social and don’t be shy; when you join the conversation and bring yourself authentically to the table, you will find there are plenty of those out there who want to help you.

Marry Me written on sandy beachSo you’ve decided to pop the question. Congratulations! With so many lush, romantic backdrops, Costa Rica is the perfect place to propose to your sweetie in a way that is beautiful and unforgettable.

Los Sueños Resort, alone, offers a number of unique, surprising, and delightful ways to ask this most important of all questions. We have a few ideas for the perfect time and place for your special moment.

After a Romantic Horseback Ride

Your concierge team at HRG can hook you up with Discovery Tours. Through Discovery, HRG can book you a private 3-hour horseback riding tour that winds through the rainforest and up a mountainside, and it ends at a hidden waterfall. This is a great place to propose, it’s private (except for the guides), it’s stunningly beautiful, and it’s one of the most romantic settings you can imagine.

At Sunset

Costa Rica’s sunsets make a glorious backdrop for a proposal, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy watching the sun set together in Los Sueños. Imagine a private sunset cruise, a bonfire on the beach, a private seaside dinner, or champagne on your private balcony.

On a Fishing Trip

Chartering a private fishing trip in Los Sueños is easy – there’s a whole marina of boats waiting for you. After a relaxing, yet exciting day of fishing, you can engineer a romantic proposal at sea. Just ask the team at HRG and they will hook you up.

During a private dinner for two

At Los Sueños, you have the option of arranging a fully stocked fridge. You can impress your sweetie by preparing a gourmet meal by candlelight, and then wow him or her by popping the question. Alternatively, Los Sueños will provide you with a personal chef, so the only thing you have to worry about is keeping track of the ring, and figuring out the best moment to propose.

At a Fantastic Restaurant

Los Sueños offers 6 different restaurants, including 5-star international cuisine options. These beautiful eateries are perfect for proposals. However, if you’d like to do something more low-key, you can take a trip into nearby Jaco Beach and find a small, cozy seaside restaurant with distinctive Costa Rican flair and flavor.

In the Rainforest Canopy

If you’re an adventurous couple, a zipline tour through the rainforest canopy may be just the venue for a proposal. Los Sueños offers one of the most popular canopy tours in Costa Rica, open to nearly all ages and abilities. While ziplining through the trees, you can stop on one of several elevated platforms and propose in the sky, surrounded by the dense foliage and tropical wildlife of the rainforest.

Something for Everyone in Costa Rica

A vacation in Costa Rica has something for everyone.

Costa Rica is a land of abundance. The small region is known for its wealth of rainforests, tropical climate and wildlife species relative to its size. The variety of natural beauty is echoed by the variety of ways to entertain and amaze its residents and visitors. When you want a one-stop vacation destination for adventure, relaxation and exotic tropical excess, Costa Rica is the place.

HRG Vacations is an all-inclusive vacation planning organization. The staff at HRG can plan your trip from beginning to end. They will pick you up at the airport, transport you to and from Los Sueños Resort & Marina on the Central Pacific coast, and set your reservations for activities and tours. There are many ways to unwind at Los Sueños Resort:

Outdoor adventure tours

There are many thrilling ways to see the jungle and its  treasure trove of wildlife including white water rafting, eco-canopy tours, motorized canopy tours, sky walking tours and zip line tours.

White water rafting is an exciting trip down a rushing river over waterfalls and around large rocks. It takes concentration and strength and gives a great adrenaline rush.

The canopy tours consist of visitors riding in a metal basket high up through the jungle trees, offering views of the birds, monkeys, and other tree-dwellers as well as beautiful panoramas of greenery and rivers running through ravines. The basket safely surrounds you while you enjoy the scenery from up high.

Eco-canopy tours provide the benefits of the motorized tours without harming the environment. You, the visitor are the motor, pulling yourself along the steel cable.
The sky walk gives you an on-high view of the jungle and its inhabitants as well. Instead of riding in a basket, you are walking across a swinging suspension bridge much like the natives used to build from rope.

Zip lining is another adrenaline rush to experience. See the jungle as you get the feeling of flying like a bird. Your tour guides help you zip from tree to tree as you hang from your harness attached to a steel cable. No basket, no walkway, just you, your harness and the open jungle air!

Outdoor relaxation activities

All outdoor activities are not appropriate for all people or all times. If you are looking for a more relaxing way to enjoy the warm Costa Rican sun and green jungle scenery, you will not be disappointed. Many activities are available like golfing, snorkeling, river tubing, horseback riding and coffee tours.

While golfing and snorkeling, you will see unique wildlife. Some examples are monkeys and birds in the jungle beside the golf course and multiple tropical fish, coral, and marine wildlife like sand dollars and starfish while snorkeling.
River tubing is a slow drift down a smoothly flowing river. Horseback riding is an equine jungle trek that leads out to a trot along the beach. Your horse may even like to swim!
The coffee tour is appropriate for any activity level. It is educational and delicious. Try some of the local blends while you are there!
Sport fishing
Out on the wild blue, you will have to opportunity to catch marlin, grouper, sailfish, swordfish, dorado fish and yellow belly tuna.
Spa days

Spend your day being pampered with tropical herbal scents. Enjoy massages and facials, manicures and pedicures in this gorgeous tropical setting.

Costa Rica Fishing Report December 2013

Costa Rica Fishing Report December 20, 2013

As Reported By Adventure Tours Costa Rica

1497759_758983167448952_1738613601_nThis year, Costa Rica fishing out of the Los Sueños Marina for both October and November has been absolutely incredible. We have had extremely high numbers of Mahi-mahi (Dorado), and these acrobatic fighters have been consistently weighing in at 20-50 pounds all green season. While trolling the coast line we have come across schools as large as several hundred of these delicious fish hiding behind floating wood and other flotsam. On average, we’ve hauled in between 2 and 4 each day.

Excited for the big game sailfish peak season to begin in January and carry on straight through to April. We expect numbers this year to be consistently high and predict between 20 and 30 bites as the season picks up. These championship fish are already biting on average between 5 and ten times per day, so this peak season promises to be a great one for the anglers.

While mahi mahi and sailfish have been strong and are just getting stronger, the real stars of the Costa Rica fishing have ben our fantastic numbers of marlin. Throughout November and December, striped and Blue Marlin have been making their presence known. We have been averaging a marlin per trip, sometimes even pulling in 2 on one trip. The large populations of Bonita and Yellow Fins have provided us with an excellent source of live bait, but getting these fish past the ample supply of hungry mahi mahi has proven challenging.

Yellow fin tuna peach season is typically between May and October but there have been a few stragglers around during the past few weeks. We have had some luck finding them near pods of spotted dolphins and flocks of birds offshore. Right out of the gate last week we pulled in one weighing over 90 lbs.

Inshore, Rooster Fish have been harder to find throughout November. We expect improved numbers by late December and predict an excellent showing through January until October. Making up for the lack of Roosters have been a great numbers of small yellow fin tuna, medium sized wahoo, amberjack, jack and snapper.

Teaching English in Costa Rica

Learning Spanish While Teaching English in Costa Rica

Learn-EnglishTeaching English, Learning Spanish and having fun; these were the themes of my recent trip to Costa Rica. I teach English to Spanish-speaking children and adults, and they teach me a little bit of Spanish along the way. I took Basic Spanish  in high school, but there is always more to learn, though, and my students teach me something new every day.

This is my third trip to Costa Rica on a temporary teaching job. I heard about this job from a friend who knows that I like to travel. I had just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and my goal was to learn more about the world while I earned a living. My friend lives in Costa Rica, and he sells real estate in and around the Los Sueños Resort and Marina; he suggested that I look into teaching jobs in the area as the town of Jaco Beach, and surrounding areas, is fast becoming one of the hottest vacation destinations in Latin America so the need for English speaking employees is high.

I am a natural teacher. I have fun talking to groups of people and they seem to be able to connect with me while I am teaching and retain a lot of the information I share. I don’t have a teaching degree, though, and I was a little worried that that might stand in the way.

I began doing some research and found that a lot of companies only require a short, one month, TEFL course. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I found that a certificate from this course along with a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college in any subject was all that was needed to be hired as an English teacher in Costa Rica. I was so excited! Three months in a foreign country teaching and getting paid to be there was, and still is, a dream come true!

I was hired at a company that wanted me to teach English to their employees so that they could brush up on their skills. Many of them had, just like me, taken a course before in high school, but they were getting rusty as time passed and they weren’t speaking it as their primary language. The company’s main market is the United States and Canada, and they needed their customer representatives to speak more fluent English.

This past trip, as I mentioned earlier, was my third trip to Costa Rica. Each time I go, I stay with my friend at the Los Sueños Resort and Marina. I absolutely love his two-bedroom condo. HRG Properties and Rentals, the realty company he bought his condo through, does a remarkable job of keeping up with any maintenance that may be required, and when my friend is not in the country they take care of marketing and renting it out for him. When I stay with him, I get my own bedroom and bathroom, and a view of the ocean, resort grounds, and golf course outside. It’s just incredible. I feel so lucky.

My friend has taken me on every adventure tour that HRG offers; and there are quite a few. From jet-skiing and waterfall rappelling to crocodile tours and high in the trees, canopy tours and so much more; we always have fun.

I am already looking for my next teaching job. I’m thinking that I may try to find one that is more permanent this time. I hope one day I can buy my own condo from HRG and live in this beautiful place full-time!

Fishing Report Early December

Fishing Report last week November first days December

By Sharon Mora

From Friday Nov 29 to this past Monday December 2 HOO’S YOUR DADDY caught 2 blue marlin, more than twenty sailfish, a good size Tuna, and an abundance of dorado.

fishing Blog DEC 5

Capt. Michael Alligood from REAL INTENSE ADVENTURES, caught a blue marlin, 4 sailfish and a bunch of Mahi Mahi; all you could want for dinner, as well as lots of 20 to 30 pound Dorado on November 25. Capitan Michael mentioned that they were so many Mahi Mahi they had to get away from them. On November 27 they caught a striped marlin, 8 sailfish, 1 Mahi, 1 weehoo, and a bunch of bonitos. He also said that the weather is getting really nice, starting to transition into high season. On November 28 they caught 1 blue marlin, 5 sailfish, 2 Mahi and this past Friday, November 29, they had a slower day, catching only a couple of Mahi Mahi.

This past Sunday December 1st I received a report that a boat out of the Marina of Quepos caught 30 sailfish in just one day of fishing!

Finally, Captain Bubba Carter from TIJERATA  let us know that, “The fishing in Los Sueños has been really good here recently, the striped marlin are here in force. Some boats getting six and eight bites a day and enough blues and sails to make grand slams a daily event but the kicker is the 35- to 45-pound Mahi Mahi are so thick that after every boat has caught a dozen are more they just start pulling teasers for marlin. They are as thick as they have ever been and the weather is beautiful, just some rain in the afternoon.”

From these reports, it sounds like its time for some sport fishing. Now is the season to get down to Costa Rica and bend those rods on some marlin and big dorado.

Man…We LOVE to fish.
