Top 10 Things to do in Costa Rica- Mountain Biking

Costa Rica is Abundant With Amazing Trails for Mountain Biking

Whether you enjoy an occasional biking challenge or biking is part of your way of life, Costa Rica is a great place to put rubber to road. You will be hard pressed to find more exciting or more beautiful trails anywhere in the world. The rainforests are lush, the mountains are majestic, and there are fascinating things to see at every turn.

However, hundreds of mountain trails beckon across the country, offering the best kind of biking adventure.

You have two options when biking in Costa Rica. You can bring your own ride, which is relatively easy to do (simply check it as luggage). This is a better option for serious riders who are used to their own equipment. Or, for a nominal fee (about $10 a day), you can rent a bike at a number of travel destinations across the country. Renting may be the best option for those who are just looking to make mountain biking part of their overall trip.

There are a number of great places for mountain biking in Costa Rica, and each offers a different experience. If you are a weekend warrior looking to take scenic tours through the Costa Rican landscape, you can go it alone on some of the easier trails, or you can take a mountain biking tour.

There are some obvious advantages to a tour: it is guided, so you will be able to see and do more than you could on your own; you won’t be left to your own devices if you experience technical difficulties; and there are tours available for different abilities, interests and terrain, so you are likely to find one that perfectly suits you.

If you are an experienced biker looking for a good challenge, you may want to take a custom tour. These tours are organized by well-versed riders who know all the best trails, and who will typically provide participants with professional equipment.

If you are a hard-core biker who wants to go it alone, there are plenty of trails that aren’t for the faint of heart. The Arenal Volcano is a favorite destination among serious mountain biking enthusiasts, prized for its diverse waterfall, mountain and volcano scenes and its challenging loop trails. Experienced bikers also like the Turrialba Volcano, Rincon de Vieja National Park, and the cloud forests in Central Valley.

The mountains can get chilly, so it is best to wear light layers. It is important to stay hydrated, even in cooler altitudes, so make sure you have plenty of water. It is also a good idea to bring along tools or extra parts for your bike in case you need to do some quick repairs while far from civilization.
