Go Where the Locals Go- Favorite Eats in Los Sueños, Costa Rica
Sometimes, to experience some of the best dining a place has to offer, you need to go where the locals go. They always know the best places to eat, and while you’re out and about trying new venues, you’re sure to have fun absorbing the local culture, getting the lay of the land, and finding new favorite spots.
There are literally hundreds of great places that locals love to frequent in Los Sueños. Here are a few of our best picks.
Jaco Soda Rustica
Sodas are popular restaurants among locals and visitors alike. They offer large portions of traditional Costa Rican fare, at low prices and in a fun, laid-back atmosphere. One of the favorite sodas among locals in the Los Sueños area is Jaco Soda Rustica, located in Jaco Beach. As far as authentic Costa Rican food goes, they make some of the best. Served buffet-style, everything is fresh, tasty and inexpensive, and there’s a wide variety to choose from. For these reasons, locals and visitors tend to come back time after time during the week.
Many locals point expats and visitors in the direction of this small, out-of-the-way restaurant, and for good reason. Its eclectic and colorful décor and upscale vibe makes it a great place to hang out – and that’s before you are even served the food. Guests rave about the menu, which offers everything from lobster corn dogs, to black bean burgers, to cocoa-encrusted steaks.
Also located in Jaco, this upscale, yet relaxed restaurant specializes in seafood, and is a popular local choice for date night and other special occasions. It may be pricey, but patrons note that it’s worth it. Their fresh-caught fish is legendary, and they also offer delicious non-seafood items.
If you’re looking for somewhere relaxed to hang out and catch the game, this surf shack-style local favorite is the place to come. Located in Playa Hermosa, the restaurant offers a varied selection that includes wraps and fresh juice smoothies, but the real draw is the fresh-caught ahi tuna that’s served daily, poke-style.
Panederia Artesenal Jaco
This open-air bakery is a great stop for breakfast. They offer delicious homemade breads and a variety of breakfast choices, from sandwiches, to salads, to wraps. The food is delicious and affordable, and visitors are often particularly impressed with the authentic-tasting bagels – a real find in Costa Rica.
Locals love this Jaco breakfast spot for its tantalizing pastries – especially its famous sweet croissants, which are available filled with caramel or dulce de leche. The bakery also offers savory treats, including delicious empanadas, sandwiches and pizza. It’s open almost around the clock on weekends, so it is a popular spot to visit after a night out on the town.
Whether you are in the mood for some of the freshest, most delicious local seafood around, or you would like to buy some of the area’s best fresh lobsters, crabs or fish to make your own seafood at home, Bertil Pescaderia in Jaco is the place to go. Locals often buy their seafood here, but the real draw is the ceviche, largely touted to be the best anywhere.
