I got Hooked…
by Sharon Mora
On February 2011, I went offshore fishing for the first time in my life. I went with my good friend Andrea Hoke; she is an amazing angler on board the Ol Salt.
About one hour after we got to the spot, we got the bite of what it seemed to be a big fish; because it was my first time, they gave me the me the rod. Lucky me, it was 400 pound blue Marlin!
At that moment I didn’t have a clue about what I was getting into; to make a long story short, I fought with that fish for well over a half an hour. I compare it to what I think it would be like to have a baby. I was fighting on the fighting chair, I was completely sweaty, my legs where shaking, my boat mates were giving me water and everybody was screaming, “it´s beautiful!” and, “Keep going, you can do it!” Then, there was a moment that I thought: I don’t think I can make it… Nevertheless, when I saw that beautiful animal jumping, and realized I was holding the other end of that line and the boat captain started backing up, I knew it that I was totally hooked.
I have never felt anything like that in any sport before. That was almost two and half years ago and I can still feel the adrenaline when I tell that story. That episode was definitely one of the main reasons that motivated me to keep living in this place, the atmosphere and life style that goes with this sport is amazing and so much fun.
Since I started writing this fishing blog, I decided it would be a good idea to tell this story of my first sport fishing experience; I want to clarify that in no way am I an expert or a pro fisherman. I am just learning and I can’t compare myself with the amazing anglers and captains around here, but I will do my best to keep everyone updated with the latest news about bites and to tell you some good stories about fishing, great anglers, and savvy captains. Most importantly, though, I’m all about sharing the great atmosphere that we have here around the resort. Hopefully you’ll be inspired to come experience it for yourself.
