Just an hour’s drive from San Jose, Los Sueños, a private resort community, sits within a 600-acre rainforest reserve. Overlooking Herradura Bay, the resort offers luxury accommodation in privately owned condominiums, villas and sprawling eco-friendly homes—each with spectacular views of ocean, jungle, mountain, marina or lush fairways.

As visiting residents, guests have access to the oceanfront Los Sueños Beach Club with its large free-form swimming pool, Jacuzzi, shower and changing facilities, extensive decks, a swim-up bar and an elevated, white sand beach. Relax under shaded palapas for a stunning view of the marina and Herradura Bay.

Marina Village’s restaurants offer a wide range of international cuisine with menu specials each weeknight. Bambu Sushi hosts regular Sushi Mondays, while El Galeón, serves or delivers prime rib dinners each Sunday. Thursdays at the Lanterna enjoy two-for-$39 three-course Italian specials. Wine Wednesdays at the Terrace Lounge, just upstairs from Lanterna, feature bottles of specially selected wines at half-price. The Terrace is also a great place to meet and mingle with the barkeeper’s specialty cocktails while enjoying the Pacific sunset. Try Dolce Vita on the square for an open-air brunch or afternoon ice cream and sweets.

The Village’s merchant square offers banking, business and retail services, as well as an urgent care medical clinic. The square is a venue for special events, including outdoor concerts, an arts and crafts festival or wine tastings.

There are plenty of recreational opportunities on or off-site. A variety of cruises, fishing charters or kayak rentals are available and bookable through the HRG concierge. Other activities include zip line canopy tours, horseback rides to waterfalls, ATV and buggy tours through the jungle. All activities include bilingual guides, safety orientations and equipment. Transportation, equipment, snacks and beverages are usually included, as is (quite often), lunch.

Most canopy tours are suitable young children age 7 and older. Tour guides will accompany your family along the cables and point out the canopy inhabitants. For youngsters or the faint-of-heart, try the aerial tram for a truly excellent tour through the canopy. Your guide will stop the car to point out the animals and explain canopy life.

Of course, there is also the kids club at Los Sueños; The Undr8teen’s Family Activity Center is Los Sueños’ latest effort to provide exceptional amenities for families with school age children and teens. Packed with loads of fun, the Unr8teen Activity Center has free Wi-Fi access, a giant flat screen TV with a Play Station 4, movies, and music videos. If Ping Pong, Air Hockey and Foosball are more appealing, those options are available too. Colorful and cool, this relaxed, safe environment is located right next door to the marina and is great fun for kids and teens to hang out on Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 11pm. Undr8teen also offers a snack bar, loaded with goodies like popcorn, chips, hotdogs, smoothies, sodas and more.

For a wonderful escape from the winter up North and a fabulous, memory making spring break 2017, reach out to the team at HRG today and book a great spring break deal.

Superbowl Sunday, a Golf Tournament by night, and Los Sueños Costa Rica

Golf Ball near hole Los Sueños Resort Costa Rica

A Golf Tournament by Night + Superbowl Sunday in Los Sueños, Costa Rica; it just doesn’t get much better then this!

A golf trip in Costa Rica can provide everything you need to get away from it all – a few nights far from home, a relaxing, leisurely game where you and your buddies can catch up and unwind, and definitely a day of sport fishing. Top all that off with great food and wonderful amenities, and you’ve got yourself a golf trip to remember. Imagine, though, combining all that with the Superbowl this February 4, 2017. That’s right, you can enjoy Superbowl LI 2017 via the big screen from the comfort of your luxury vacation villa or condo in Los Sueños Resort, right after a long day of superb golfing. Of course, we don’t know who’s going to the bowl yet, but they’ll be playing in Texas, and you can watch them from Costa Rica.   The 15th edition of the La Iguana Invitational is open, by invitation only, to La Iguana Golf Course Los Sueños Marriott Members, residents and owners in Los Sueños Resort, boat owners with slips in the marina, and professional golfers from around the country. The tournament will be held on Superbowl Sunday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00am and going on through the night. A different experience, you will be golfing with neon balls at night. For more information about joining the tournament, you can contact the La Iguana Golf Course directly.   Los Sueños Resort is the perfect place for a golf trip. Not only does the Los Sueños Resort offer beautiful vacation condos and villas with fantastic amenities, it also has a first-class golf course that makes for a worthy game. The La Iguana Golf Course is a naturally challenging, 18-hole championship golf course designed by Ted Robinson. And, as if that were not enough, the course is set in paradise. La Iguana backs up to the rainforest, and also features spectacular ocean views. So what does a jungle golf course mean for your golfing experience? It means that the rainforest is part of the course itself. This is not a walk on a hilly barren green – this is an exotic place, with brightly colored flowers and lush green tropical plants. This is a place where a monkey just might steal your golf ball, and you may see a macaw peering down at you from a banana tree as you tee up for a hole. A place where you can experience the rainforest as you play against a seaside backdrop. The La Iguana course is deceptively challenging. Fortunately, there are PGA-qualified golf professionals on hand to help you, and you’ll have access to state-of-the-art golfing equipment and a huge putting green and driving range. And what is a golf game without a solid challenge, anyway? HRG Vacations offers great golfing packages, which include a stay in a luxury condo, unlimited golfing for two days, and airport transfers. The rates are reasonable, and the golfing is great year around, so of course you can come any time, but we do recommend making a Superbowl weekend out of it. For those times when you’re not on the course, there is plenty to do. Whether you want to hit the spa for a deep tissue massage or head out for a zip lining adventure, an ATV trek through the mountainside, or try your hand on a sport fishing trip, you can do it all in or near Los Sueños Resort and Marina. If you get hungry after a long day of golfing, Los Sueños offers 12 restaurants, all of which will cater to your door should you feel like staying in. There are also lots of great restaurants nearby where you can get some great local cuisine. And if you’re looking for something to after-hours, the breezy beach town of Jaco – known for its great night life — is just a few minutes away. Why not plan a long weekend at Los Sueños Resort and join in the golf tournament to boot? Call today to make your reservations; it could be the best boy’s weekend away you’ve had in a while.

Los Sueños Resort & Marina has much to Offer During Costa Rica’s Dry Season

Costa Rica Sunset

Check out our favorite tours and activities during dry season at Los Sueños Resort, Costa Rica

High season, also known as “dry season” in Costa Rica, is a great time to visit; especially if you like a celebratory atmosphere with your vacation. For those who are seeking a bit of a party along with their rest, relaxation, adventure and discovery, high season is the perfect time of year to visit Costa Rica as the entire country is a little fuller with happy travelers. The dry season (December through May) includes almost all of Costa Rica (the Caribbean costs tends to be a bit rainy), with February through March being the driest months. Temperatures range from the low 80s in the central valley to the mid to upper 90s on the coast. Combined with 10 to 12 hours of daily sunshine, the climate makes nearly every tour or activity possible. Here are some of our favorite things to do in and around Los Sueños Resort & Marina during dry season:

  • Sport fishing is probably the number one adventure for those staying at Los Sueños Resort & Marina. In fact, it may be safe to say it’s the go-to activity its most widely and well known for. With its 200-slip marina, famous sport fishing tournaments, and happy angler-lifestyle, Los Sueños Resort & Marina will almost be lost on you without at least one day out on the water. Half day charters or full, newbies and old-salts, sport fishing is a must and your concierge team at HRG can help hook you up with a great boat, captain and crew.

  • Dry season is also the perfect time to surf Costa Rica’s excellent waves. The northern Pacific’s winter weather patterns and offshore winds combine for challenging surfing up and down the coast; from Pavones to Paya Hermosa, and Witch’s Rock to Santa Teresa, the Nicoya Peninsula shelters the central Pacific coast from the strong swells common farther north. Beginning surfers can take lessons at nearby Jacó Beach, just 10 minutes from Los Sueños Resort.

  • If you’re not up for being out on the water, pick one of many beautiful beaches in the area and just lounge under the sun and shade for the day. Be careful though. Remember how close we are to the equator in Costa Rica (use sunscreen!), and keep in mind that not every beach is a swimming beach; many require some kind of floating device such as a boogie board, surf board, kayak or stand up paddle board.

  • The forests have much to offer, as well. Why not join waterfall rappelling adventure tour, visit the hanging bridges, or hike the trails of any of Costa Rica’s nearby national parks?

  • Zip-lining through the canopy will give you a sloth’s eye view (at Superman’s speed) of the treetops and the ground below; it will also give you quite a rush.

  • And speaking of rushes, white-water river rafting is an adventure that can’t be missed. Don’t worry if you’re a beginner or have kids in the gang; all of the river rafting companies have terrific guides who are very experienced and have excellent safety training. Also, there are different levels of rapids to choose from when you decide which tour to take.

  • Olive Ridley, leatherback and green sea turtles come ashore in huge numbers in November and December all along the Pacific side, and there’s usually a steady flow of hatchlings headed for the surf through May. You and the family can volunteer to help them get safely out to sea or even just pick up trash along the beach to help protect them in their environment.

  • Humpback whales are also a common sight along the Pacific shore, as are other whale species, dolphins and porpoises. Consider a sunset cruise, or better yet, a Tortuga Island tour, which comes complete with snorkeling gear and lunch.

  • And, finally, there is plenty of fauna to fascinate you during your Costa Rica vacation. Bird watching is excellent, with many different species; the monkeys—white-faced Capuchins, howlers and titis (spider)—are always entertaining; sloths are harder to spot, but ever present; coatis and raccoons are everywhere (watch out for your lunch!); and, well, there is never any shortage of Iguanas, butterflies, dragonflies, and army ants. In all cases, a local guide is a great asset in spotting the local wildlife. HRG staff can help you find the right guide.

From spa days to drinking and dining, ATV tours, horseback riding and river floating, the dry season at Los Sueños Resort & Marina is a great time to see and e

5 Favorite Dining Options in the Los Sueños Resort Area

Delicious desert at El Hicaco Restaurant

Love going out to dinner? Don’t miss these 5 foody favorites near Los Sueños Resort

One of the things I love the most about vacationing in Los Sueños is the abundance of food options; like many travelers, food is a big part of traveling for me.  When headed for a stay Los Sueños Resort, it’s always a given that fresh ceviche and ice cold michaladas are in store. There is no shortage of great places to fine ceviche and beer, so I won’t go into those here. However, we do have a few favorite restaurants for finer dining in the evening; none of which should be missed. El Hicaco Perfectly situated right on the beach in midtown Jaco open air dining, a good wine list and excellent food make El Hicaso a favorite on my list of best dining options in the Los Sueños Resort- Jaco Beach area. Known especially for its Wednesday night All You Can Eat Lobster Feast, El Hicaco features freshly caught seafood flame-grilled seven days per week for lunch and dinner.  Reservations are highly recommended. Kaya Grill and Bar Conveniently located right in Jaco, kaya Grill and Bar invites you “taste the good life.” A casual atmosphere known for its exceptional steaks and seafood, you you won’t be sorry that you stopped in for a bite.  As good as the food is, though, you’ll want to try one of Kaya’s specialty drinks; from excellent sangria to their “Summer Breeze” made up of fresh pineapple juice, white wine and mint, the cocktails alone will blow you away. Lemon Zest An intimate experience, Lemon Zest Restaurant represents years of experience, classic techniques, modern presentations, new flavor combinations using fresh local ingredients. Fine wines, a full bar, homemade desserts including Nellie’s famous peanut butter ice cream pie, Bananas Foster Cheesecake & Mango Crème Brulee Pie all serve to compliment the excellent fare coming out of Chef Lemon’s kitchen. Try the duck; you’ll be thrilled that you did! Adventure Dining As much an experience as it is a good meal, your Adventure begins with a scenic coastal drive before ascending one of Costa Rica’s highest mountains. As you traverse the dense rainforest, breathtaking views appear around every turn. When you reach your final destination, you will simply say… WOW!. The open air dining platform overlooks the tallest waterfall in Costa Rica & miles of pristine coastline. Fresh flowers, tiki torches & romantic music create an unforgettable ambience. As the sun sets over the mountains, you can enjoy an open bar along with delicious appetizers. Dinner is begun with a delicious salad followed by entrees like filet minion with mushroom sauce & sea bass Kung Pao. After coffee & dessert, you are free to dance or simply enjoy the comradery and the music. Graffiti Restro & Wine Bar The ghetto-gourmet concept of this Jacó hot spot plays with the senses, starting with an interior that blends graffiti with soft candlelight and jazz. Chef Danny Clark’s menu relies on only fresh, locally grown ingredients, which go into dishes ranging from sushi to vegetarian, with creations like cacao-and-coffee-rubbed beef tenderloin, and a tuna-tartare tower that melts in your mouth. For something with a kick, try the snook seasoned with five Caribbean spices and topped with caramel soy. Fridays and Saturdays are a good day to visit, when Grafitti enjoys live music. Be sure to sample a signature martini with lemongrass and ginger or cucumber and basil, and indulge in one of the extraordinary desserts like chocolate cheesecake or peanut-butter-and-banana flambé. Finally, take home Graffiti’s flavors with their homemade spices and recipes, sold at the attached gallery, Urban Awol.

# Tips for Spending Christmas & New Years in Costa Rica.

holidays in Costa Rica

Give the gift of travel this season; spend the holidays in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s holiday celebrations begin in early December and run through Jan. 6 (Epiphany or Three Kings Day) with many colorful festivals and parades. As in other Latin American countries, Christmas in Costa Rica is a colorful, reverent and joyful celebration, making it an exceptional time to bring the entire family for a new spin on family holiday traditions.

The beauty of Christmas, Hanukah or New Year’s at Los Sueños is that you can include the whole family, from the tiniest tot, to great uncle Frank. The HRG concierge team can help you find the perfect vacation villa, with plenty of room for everyone. You can take advantage of everything Los Sueños has to offer for a hassle-free holiday; here’s how.

  • Air travel at Christmas time can be difficult, but the folks at Los Sueños can take the sting out of coordinating itineraries and airport transfers. That you gives you plenty of time to lounge poolside with a glass of your favorite holiday beverage before the gang arrives.

  • The concierge team will also buy the groceries, stock the pantry and put supper on the table, leaving you to enjoy the spirit of the season with the rest of the family. They can arrange a private chef or dinner reservations at one of the resort’s top restaurants. (You can even have dinner delivered from the restaurant.)

  • Housekeeping during the Christmas season can be endless but HRG staff can arrange housekeeping and laundry services, while you avoid dishpan hands.

  • From Posadas to Carnaval, HRG’s concierge team knows what’s happening at Los Sueños and in the immediate area over the holidays, including the New Year’s boat parade of lights and glam holiday parties at the resort. In addition, HRG’s friendly staff can provide countless tour and activity options suitable for everyone in the family, including transportation.

  • For easier logistics, save the presents until everyone returns home. Instead, wrap a picture or description of your gift and put it under the tree or tuck it into a stocking. It’s the best of both worlds, something to open but nothing to pack and haul home.

For a simpler, more festive holiday celebration, a little advance planning means you can relax and enjoy while the concierge team at Los Sueños makes it a Christmas to remember.

7 Awesome Things to do in Jaco, Costa Rica

jaco-beach-aerial

Jaco Beach, Costa Rica is conveniently located just next door to Los Sueños Resort & Marina

We love Jaco Beach, Costa Rica because its just so conveniently close to Los Sueños Resort & Marina, which, of course, is only an hour away from San Jose and the Juan Santamaria International Airport. Offering everything a proper city should have to offer, Jaco Beach keeps us close to civilization and yet deep enough in the rainforest to really enjoy Costa Rica as one should. Whether you’re enjoying a sport fishing vacation at Los Sueños Resort, you’re here for some family fun in the sun, or even your dream destination wedding, you may want to get over to Jaco during your stay. Here are our favorite tings to do in, and around, Jaco Beach, Costa Rica

Surfing & Surf Lessons

Even if you have never set foot on a surfboard, you can still have a fantastic surfing experience in Costa Rica. Most commercial surfing spots offer lessons and camps, one of the best being Jaco Beach, right next door to Los Sueños Resort & Marina. In Jaco, you will find a number of qualified surf instructors, many of whom are champion surfers themselves. You will also find tame waves that are perfect for just starting out. For those who are a little more experienced on a board, there are plenty of great surf breaks too. Head just a few miles further south of Jaco Beach, toward Playa Hermosa: the waves are fierce and always stellar.

Zip-line Canopy Tour

Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s lushest and beautiful rain forests, cloud forests and dry forests. Seeing the majesty of these jungle canopies from the ground is a bucket-list worthy adventure in and of itself. However, seeing them up-close and personal, with a birds-eye view of the forest floor, is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There really isn’t anything like soaring through the Costa Rican greenery on a zip line, and in Costa Rica, there are plenty of zip line adventures to be had.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Located just an hour down the coast from Jaco Beach, Manuel Antonio National Park encompasses rugged rainforest, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. It’s renowned for its vast diversity of tropical plants and wildlife, from three-toed sloths and endangered white-faced capuchin monkeys to hundreds of bird species. The park’s roughly 680 hectares are crossed with hiking trails, which meander from the coast up into the mountains.

ATV Tours

Imagine exploring Costa Rica’s beaches, rainforests, remote villages, waterfalls, and wildlife while driving an ATV, motorcycle or UTV.  Whether you’re a first-timer, or a seasoned veteran looking for something more challenging, there is an off-road adventure for you! ATV tours leave conveniently from Jaco Beach – just five minutes away from Los Sueños Resort.

Horseback Riding

Step off the tourist trail and discover the old Costa Rica!  You will find yourself immersed in the abundant flora and fauna. Ride through the jungle trails to the secret mineral spring waterfall and enjoy a natural mineral mud spa treatment that that will leave your skin feeling amazing. Even if it is your first time in the saddle, you’ll feel like an accomplished rider in the saddle of these gentle horses. Riders with experience will have a great time too, as all the horses are happy, fit and responsive.

Dining and Dancing

Jaco nightlife is abundant with terrific options for dining and dancing. Whether you’re looking for an upscale seafood restaurant for al fresco dining right on the beach or a French bistro for elegant, fine dining, there are plenty of options. Fish tacos, burger, vegan and organic fare; the foodies in your group will find Jaco to be a delight to the palate. If dancing and drinking are what you’re after, there are plenty of options for that too. From small pubs to throbbing discos, its easy to find live entertainment, reggae, deep house or reggaeton and the drinks are flowing everywhere.

Casino Gaming

Jacó Beach is home to Croc’s Casino, a small, elegant beachfront venue in resplendent Las Vegas style. The craps, roulette and blackjack dealers are professional and friendly. Also on Playa Jacó, Morgan´s Cove Resort & Casino on Playa Jacó features U.S.-style breakfast and international cuisine at the Black Beard Lounge and Restaurant. The casino also includes a bar.

Souvenir Shopping

Despite the fact that Jaco beach is but a small surf town, there are plenty of wonderful stores and boutiques throughout the area.  Some of the local art is utterly amazing.   Local woods, custom clothing, jewelry and plenty of Costa Rica souvenirs can be found throughout town.  Just like anywhere else, not all stores are created equal, so here are some of our favorites and most recommended.

Thanksgiving in Los Sueños Resort, Costa Rica

Thanksgiving turkey at Los Suenos resort

How to plan the perfect thanksgiving weekend away with the family in Los Sueños Costa Rica

Thanksgiving is a terrific time to plan a four-day weekend away in Costa Rica; why not grab the entire family and book a nice spacious vacation villa or family condo through HRG Vacations at Los Sueños Resort?

There are a number of great restaurant options in the area for that traditional Turkey dinner; typically, El Galleon serves terrific traditional fare for the holiday, but with six amazing restaurants to choose right in Los Sueños Resort’s own Marina Village, you can also go for something a little more on the non-traditional side, like Italian or Sushi.

Jaco Beach, right next door, has a bounty of options to choose from too, and according to one reviewer on TripAdvisor, Lemon Zest Restaurant serves “the best thanksgiving dinner ever.”

Still, restaurant thanksgivings don’t always feel quite traditional enough and the food just isn’t quite the same as mom’s or grandma’s. If you’re looking to create your own thanksgiving feast in your own home away from home, that’s easy to do too. Plan ahead by sending a shopping list to your concierge team at HRG Vacations. We can stock your fridge and pantry before you arrive with all the ingredients you need, plus breakfast foods, wine and beer too.

Or, if you get here with plenty of time to spare, you can easily do your own shopping for those dinner preparations.  Between Pricesmart and Don Fernando’s Meats (before you leave San Jose), Jimmy T’s Provisions Gourmet Shop right in the Marina Village, and Automercado just down the street, you’ll have plenty of resources for all the ingredients you need to create the perfect traditional family Thanksgiving banquet.

Want the best of both worlds (as in, no cooking and no restaurant reservations either)? Touch base with our team and arrange for a private chef or catered Thanksgiving dinner for you and the gang right there in your vacation villa or condo; its as easy as asking when you make your vacation rental reservation. We can either make all the arrangements for you or put you directly in touch with any number of terrific private chefs or caterers in the area.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for friends, family and chosen family to get together, give thanks for all of the abundance in our lives, share some laughter, watch some football and make some memories. Why not do something al little extra fun this year? Make it a long weekend, thanksgiving escape to paradise. Make it Thanksgiving in Costa Rica.

Celebrate Halloween at Los Sueños Resort, Costa Rica

halloween golf carts Los Sueños Resort

Halloween is scary fun at Los Sueños Resort, Costa Rica

kids dressed for halloween at Los Sueños Marina VillageHalloween can be a special kind of fun at Los Sueños Resort & Marina; a tropical vacation and all the fun of trick or treating, costume contests (for the young and the old) and Halloween tricks, treats and parties too. Every year the Los Sueños Resort team does a great job of putting together events for the young and the young at heart alike. Here are a few tips for having great fun on your Halloween vacation at Los Sueños.

Kid’s Halloween Fun at Los Sueños

  • Book a golf cart in advance for trick or treating with the kids. Los Sueños Resort is a pretty big place, so you’ll want to have a golf cart for getting around. Most people like to decorate their carts with spider webs and other hauntingly fun Halloween decorations.

  • Don’t plan to go door to door for trick or treating. Most communities are closed. However, the guards at each community gate all have plenty of candy! You’ll make your way around the resort and stop at each community entry so the kids can yell, “trick or treat!” or Costa Rica’s equivalent: “Halloween, Halloween!”

  • Be sure to put as much effort into great costumes as you would at home; but this time you can skip the warmth factor. Remember it’s hot and humid, so plan accordingly. Last year I dressed my grandson up as the Hulk and all his body paint melted off by the end of the day! He still looked pretty darn cute, though…

  • After you’ve made the candy rounds in the resort, head for the Marina Village. There will be plenty of candy at all the shops, offices and locations.

  • At the end of the day, its time for the costume contest. Typically this is held at the Hook Up around 5pm, where the adults can have a drink while the kids line up to see who takes the prize. You can always find the details of events on HRG’s Facebook page, or that of Los Sueños Resort.

  • Last but not least, head back to your vacation rental condo or villa, get some real food into the kids before they dive into that candy (Don’t cook- order in!), and then leave them with the sitter (remember the team at HRG can help you arrange for one!) to go get ready for your own party.

Adult Halloween Fun at Los Sueños

  • You may be planning on doing a little drinking this All Hallows Eve, so maybe skip the golf cart and opt for a private driver or a taxi. Your HRG concierge can arrange either for you.  It’s just as important to drink responsibly in Costa Rica as it is in the States! Stay safe and have a scarily fun evening.

  • Every year Los Sueños Resort holds a great Halloween costume contest for the adults too, so be sure to put as much thought and creativity into your disguise as you would back home. Remember, same tip applies for adults as it does for kids: Plan for hot and humid weather; great news for those going for that “sexiest costume” prize, as well as minimizing packing weight for that flight down to Costa Rica!

Halloween in Costa Rica can be great fun; this year it falls on a Monday, so why not plan now for a 3 or 4 day weekend and head on down to Los Sueños Resort?
