The 2nd Leg of the Los Sueños Triple Crown Billfish Series is about to begin!
Tranquilo leads the fleet going into Leg II of the Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown. The second leg of the record-breaking tournament begins Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016.
Agitator and Fish Tank finished second and third, respectively, with Sea Angel a close fourth during leg I. Tranquilo’s homeport advantage paid off in Leg I, the team caught and released 66 sails and three marlin to take home $75,000 in prize money. Carlos Gonzalez, aboard Gunsmoke, reeled in Leg I honors for Top Angler, 33 sails for an individual total of 3,300 points.
With 44 teams and the bite on, it’s all about who reels ‘em in the fastest between lines in 8 a.m. Thursday and lines out at 4 p.m. Saturday. All boats start the leg on even trim and Leg II is up for grabs. With sails worth 1,000 points and marlin 5,000 per release, previous champions and newcomers alike depend on their captains’ knowledge of local waters for tight lines and maximum points. Any of the other boats in Leg I’s top 10—Trophy Box, Tijereta, Blue Eagle, Reel Screamer, Jaruco or High Hook—are well placed to take the overall lead by the end of Leg II.
The calm Pacific waters and short distance to the fishing grounds make Los Sueños a top billfish destination. Within 50 miles of Herradura Bay, it’s possible to win sportfishing’s grand slam—blue, black and striped marlin in one day, not to mention the big Pacific sailfish. That kind of challenging opportunity keeps the competition fierce from day-to-day.
The tournament fleet sets sail early Thursday morning for the first of three days’ fishing. By the time lines out is called late Saturday afternoon, anglers will have had three days of the best sportfishing available anywhere—at Los Sueños. Follow the action live between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or check the scoreboard about 6 p.m. daily for official standings.
