Learning to Surf in Costa Rica

What an incredible Costa Rica Surf trip!

When my buddies and I decided we wanted to learn how to surf,  we thought, what better place to do so than in Costa Rica? We decided to stay at the Los Sueños Resort  after researching online. With only five days to vacation we hoped to get as many surf lessons in as we could, although after hours of looking at the HRG Properties and Rentals website, and reading all about the resort and all cool tours and activities, we realized that there was much more to do than surf while in Costa Rica.

The HRG representative I spoke to over the phone was more than helpful. He facilitated the booking of our Los Sueños condo over the phone and scored us a discount on our 4×4 SUV rental from National Rental Cars. He then proceeded to provide me with much more information regarding the many activities offered at Los Sueños  by the HRG team. After sharing the information with my buddies, we knew that the trip would be a blast!

Picking up the vehicle next to the San Jose airport couldn’t have been easier. The drive from the airport to Herradura beach was beautiful and very scenic, only taking about an hour and twenty minutes. Roughly twenty minutes before reaching our destination we stopped at a bridge where there was a small congregation of tourists taking pictures over the railings. There we were able to observe at least a couple dozen giant crocodiles below. We couldn’t believe our eyes; they were huge!

Upon arrival at Los Sueños Resort and Marina, we were even more blown away by the luxurious accommodations of our vacation condo. Ten times better than the pictures, it was fully equipped, and unbelievably comfortable! We checked out the local grocery store, a five minute drive back towards the main road, which was very upscale; they had everything we needed in order to fill our fridge for the rest of the trip. Once back, we went down to the Los Sueños Beach Club for the sunset and enjoyed a few Mai Tais.

The following morning we met up with our surf instructor and drove about fifteen minutes south to Jaco Beach to catch the morning session. There we spent nearly three hours in the water “learning the ropes” of surfing. To say the least, sitting on our boards out in the blue-green warm water was magical. I was surprised how easy the instructor made it, and I was able to catch a handful right away. The feeling of surfing was so profound that I fell in love immediately. The instructor informed us that he lived and surfed in Hermosa Beach, about fifteen minutes further south from Jaco Beach, and that we should check it out.

After finishing our first lessons, we did check out Hermosa Beach. Again, the scenery along the drive was breathtaking. The absolute sheer beauty of Hermosa Beach with its black volcanic sands, the lush vibrant green jungle jetting out all the way to the beach from atop the rocky cliffs, toucans flying overhead through the air, and giant palm trees protruding out and over the beach towards the ocean, all made for a perfect, picturesque moment. We lunched at a local restaurant called The Back Yard and were informed by our server that there were literally dozens of beach break points stretching for miles down the coast. We all agreed right there, and then, that we would master surfing and return here again and again without a doubt.

The third day we went on an ATV tour, which was organized and scheduled for us by the HRG tour office. The guide showed us some awesome view points in the Jaco hills, where we were able to see all sorts of wild life. Later that night we hit the Los Sueños Marriott Casino, the Stellaris, where I won a hundred and fifty bucks! Not a very big casino, but plenty of beautiful “chicas” tending the tables made up for it.

The fourth day, we hit Jaco Beach for some more surf lessons. I was able to stand up at least a dozen times! Words cannot describe the feeling of sitting out there on a board. The instructor swam nearby in complete silence, allowing us to fully absorb the essence of surfing: the warmth from the sun on our backs, the slow rise and fall of the sea, the intense silence with all but the soothing sound of rolling, crashing waves, and the occasional squawks of pelicans flying above; we were truly in heaven.

Later that day, a few of us called up the spa and had in-house massages, which were absolutely amazing. Then later, after dinner, we went out to Jaco to check out the nightlife. There were many different spots to check out, and we did our best to “bar-hop” through them all.

On the fifth day, we drove a little over an hour south to Manuel Antonio and visited the National Park there. Again, we saw all sorts of wildlife—monkeys, iguanas, a sloth, and some pesky raccoons that made an attempt for the food in our bags. You’ve got to watch out for them! It was fun; I cannot recommend strongly enough that you visit this magical place.

The next morning, with bags tied down on top of the SUV, we bid our farewells and made our way back to San Jose for our flight home. What an incredibly extraordinary vacation; thank you Los Sueños HRG for making it so.
