Leg I of the Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown Billfish Series starts today
Leg 1 of the third annual Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown Billfish series kicks off today, Jan. 20, 2016, at Los Sueños Marina in Costa Rica, with team registration at 1 p.m. and captain and observer meetings at 5 p.m.
The following day, boats set sail from Herradura and Los Sueños Marina docks at 6 a.m. for lines in at 8 on the first of three days’ competitive catch-and-release fishing. In 2014, organizers introduced the Triple Crown tournament after 10 years of hosting the Los Sueños Signature Billfish Series.
From the first, The Triple Crown competition broke all previous Los Sueños records: In 2014, teams caught and released 5,078 billfish over nine 9 days. The following year, 2015, records shattered again when some 39 teams released 5,732 billfish in nine days of fishing. This year, anglers are set to top the previous two years.
Experienced IGFA, IGFTO or LSOCP (Los Sueños Resort Observer Certification Program)-certified observers are aboard each boat during the billfish series, in the cockpit close to the action, to ensure species identification under extreme conditions.
This year, sponsors include twenty-five international and local companies, including Los Sueños Resort and Marina, Chantilly Air, Costa Rica Dreams Sport fishing and Clínica Bíblica. Over the years, our organizers have worked to build lasting relationships with sponsors, helping them to promote and build their business. This Signature Triple Crown tournament in Costa Rica gives sponsors an excellent opportunity each day to meet and connect personally with members of their target audience over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres dockside after a day of exciting and competitive fishing.
The waters offshore have become internationally renowned, rightly making Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast the Billfish Capital of the World. First, second and third-place Leg 1 winners split the prize money: 50% to the winner, 30% to second place and 20% to third. Legs 2 and 3 begin Feb. 24 and March 30, respectively, and the series championship team walks away with $100,000, as well as top bragging rights. The word is out: If you want to catch fish and compete against the world’s best bill fishing teams, you need to be in Los Sueños for the Signature Triple Crown.
